Sylvia Muhonen Obituary, Death – Sylvia Mary (Halonen) Muhonen, 95, of Buffalo, Minnesota, died on March 29, 2023. Charles and Tynne (Oikelmus) Halonen gave birth to her in a sod hut in Temvik, North Dakota, on March 22, 1928. Early life in North and South Dakota. She graduated from White Bear Lake High School in 1945.
December 11, 1948, Sylvia married Walter Muhonen. They lived in the upstairs flat of the Halonen home until Wally could build their first home with materials they could afford. She lovingly remembered those pleasant years in White Bear, where she spent her busy days taking care of her baby, her sisters, and their families.
Her husband Walter, son Dennis, parents Charles and Tynne, stepmother Anna (Jurmu) Halonen, grandson Grant Hillukka, 8 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild; siblings Carl (Eunice), Judith (Mervin) Mattila, Gladys (Paul) Kariniemi, Fred (Thelma), Mildred (Paul) Raisanen, Paul, Edward, George, and Sharen Anderson; brothers-in-law Ernest Lehtola and Paul Ylitalo; and stepbrothers Clifford (Carol) Jurmu and Robert Jurmu.
Sylvia loved visitors. She listened and comforted others. Her faith was everything. She often visited or wrote to children, grandchildren, and friends to remind them of the Christian life. Nancy (Robert) Keranen, Cindy (Arnold) Keranen, and her daughter-in-law survive Sylvia. Enid Muhonen, Susan (Kalevi) Tarnanen, Margo (Duane) Hillukka, Linda (Mike) Landa, Cheryl (Steve) Kumpula, Greg (Donna), Nathan (Janelle), Martha (Eric) Oja, Dale (Kimberly), Diane (Loren) Hillukka and Steve (Sheila); 152 grandchildren, 730 great-grandchildren, and 61 great-great grandchildren; her siblings: Virginia Lehtola, Raymond (Betty) Halonen, Lillian Ylitalo, Donald (Florence) Halonen; sisters-in-law: Lorraine Miriam Jurmu, family, and friends.
Rockford Laestadian Lutheran Church will host Sylvia Muhonen’s funeral on April 6, 2023, at 11:00 AM. Reverend Allen Pirness officiates. Wednesday, April 5, 2023, 5:00–9:00 PM, church visitation. Church visitation will continue one hour before the service. On Friday, April 7, 2023, at 11:00 AM, the Minnesota State Veteran’s Cemetery in Little Falls, MN will bury him.
