She and her husband took several trips together, and each time they returned, they had a whole new set of friends and acquaintances. Because of this, they were able to extend their circle of friends. Shirley enjoyed doing things like scrapbooking, knitting, cross-stitching, roller skating, and going for long walks when the weather was nice enough for her to do so.
