After working his way up through the ranks at Grace, where he had previously earned an MBA through the Harvard Executive School, he eventually became the Director of Sales and Marketing for polyolefin products sold in every market across the world. As a result of this, he was able to go to a significant number of destinations dispersed across the globe. Singapore, which stood out amid the other locations, was one of his favorite destinations to visit. He never got weary of striking up talks with the myriad of fellow passengers he met along the way.
In 1960, Bob received his diploma from Chaminade High School, which was located in Mineola, New York. At the same time that he was attending classes at the University of Notre Dame, he was also a member of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC). He participated in the marching band at Notre Dame, where he was a member and played the saxophone. He never stopped following and cheering on the Fighting Irish in their many sporting events throughout the years. In 1964, he received his bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from the institution he attended.
Fort Benning, Georgia served as the location where Robert finished his two years of active duty with the 820th Ordnance Company. He first made the acquaintance of the woman who would go on to become his wife in 1964 during a reception that was thrown at Aberdeen Proving Ground for Johns Hopkins nursing students and soldiers. Her name was Maryann Kook. He spent almost all of his monthly stipend on a 1965 Mustang and on phone expenditures with his future wife when they were courting long distance. This occurred during the period that he and his future wife were courting long distance. 1966 was the year that Bob and Maryann tied the knot as husband and wife.
After fulfilling his obligation in the military and rising through the ranks to the rank of Captain, he started his career in Baltimore, Maryland, with Grace Davison. He stayed with the company for the following 38 years, with the exception of a brief stint in which he worked for Harshaw Chemical in Cleveland, Ohio, between the years 1981 and 1983. This was the only break he took from working for the company.
