Rachel Fowlkes Obituary, Death – Rachel Gayle Davis Fowlkes, who had been a resident of Abingdon, Virginia, passed away at Johnston Memorial Hospital on Saturday, April 1, 2023 as a result of complications following a stroke. Rachel Gayle Davis Fowlkes had been admitted to the hospital on Friday, March 31, 2023. On Friday, March 31st, 2023, she was checked into the hospital to begin her treatment.
She was surrounded by her children, her grandkids, and a large number of other family members and friends of the family. Her children had all traveled to be with her. Her offspring and grandkids surrounded and comforted her. Rachel is survived by her daughter, Merrill Fowlkes Hoopengardner; son, John Templeton Fowlkes; son-in-law, Andrew John Hoopengardner; daughter-in-law, Alena Dubavaya; grandchildren.
Eleanor Gayle Hoopengardner, Claire Elizabeth Hoopengardner, and Marvin Alan Fowlkes; brother, Tommy Davis; sisters-in-law, Frances Davis and Janine Davis; and several nieces and nephews and their children. Her parents, John T. Davis and Elizabeth Watts Davis, and her brother, Robert Davis, all went away before she did. She was the last surviving member of her family.
The news of her passing came as a shock to everyone. She was the only member of her family to have reached an advanced age and she was the only one who did. Rachel was the first member of her family’s female lineage to graduate from college. She was also the first person in her family to attend college. She was born in Meridian, Mississippi, on January 29, 1945, and is well-known for being an influential educator as well as a visionary leader.
Her birthday is January 29. Rachel was the first member of her family’s female lineage to graduate from an academic institution of higher learning with a degree. Millsaps College is where she received her degree, in addition to being a member of the varsity cheerleading squad, an active member of the Chi Omega sorority, and a member of the Millsaps Singers. She also participated in the Millsaps Singers.
In addition to that, she was a member of the Millsaps Singers. She went on to get a master’s degree from Mississippi State University and a doctoral degree in education from the University of Virginia. Both of these degrees are in education. These two degrees are related to education and are both earned at the bachelor’s level. She relocated to Abingdon in 1969 with her then-husband, John Thomas Fowlkes (Tom), and she lived on Main Street for a significant portion of her life in that city.
