Lily Koehn Obituary, Death – The men’s basketball team from Kansas State University prevailed in a nail-biter to advance to the Sweet 16 on Thursday night in New York City. Yet, the most important minutes for head coach Jerome Tang occurred before the ball was even tipped. He decided to make a call unrelated to the game, briefly stepping aside from the enormous stage on which his team was ready to play in order to do so. He did this because he was thinking about the life of a student he had met.
After receiving her diploma from Maize High School the previous year, Lily Koehn enrolled as a first-year student at Kansas State University. She was a devoted follower of the Kansas State Wildcats in basketball, and she first became acquainted with Tang during a dinner that the first-year head coach of the Wildcats attended with her sorority chapter.
Koehn passed away on March 10 as a result of the injuries she sustained in an automobile accident in Harvey County. When Tang’s brother passed away unexpectedly 14 years ago, he was left with a void in his life, and he recalled his mother saying that the loss of a child is the most excruciating agony a parent can go through. Tang spoke with Warren and Julie Koehn, Koehn’s parents, on the phone before the game against Michigan State on Thursday night.
Because of the anguish that they must be through, “When I heard what occurred, I’ve been trying to get the number so that I could reach out to her parents,” Tang added. “So, while I was sitting there (Thursday) forty minutes before the game, instead of just me thinking about what may go wrong and everything else of the sort, I said to myself, ‘you know dude, I could use this time to bless somebody’s life.
‘” Hence, I was able to get in touch with [Koehn’s] parents and have a simple conversation with them. I also made sure to let them know that I was thinking about them and praying for them.
