On August 8, 1970, Officer Wolsch enrolled in the 42nd Cadet Class of the Austin Police Department, which marked the beginning of his career in law enforcement. He received his commission on March 26, 1971, and on September 26, 1995, after having served for a total of 24 years, he retired. Officer Wolsch was the first Narcotics K9 Handler for the Austin Police Department and served for a number of years in the Narcotics division of the department.
The neighborhood drug dealers in East Austin gave him the nickname “Swoopdown” as a result. Officer James Wolsch is survived by his wife Wanda, son John, daughters Nicole and Brittany, seven granddaughters, six great-grandchildren, and a large number of nieces and nephews.
